The beaches in Cape Town had a rhythm to them. Surfboards propped in long rows along the sand, color after color against the light. I never set out to paint that, and Shoreline Stripes is not a picture of it. The colors here are their own, the lines their own. But the coastline is somewhere in it, in the way the stripes hold their spacing, the quiet between them, the loose marks that drift across the surface the way water slides back over wet sand. Hang it somewhere the light moves through the day. It will not look the same at noon as it does at dusk.
