Cape Town's beaches kept a rhythm. Surfboards stood in long rows along the sand, one color after another in the light. I never planned to paint that, and Shoreline Stripes isn't a picture of it. The colors here are their own, the lines their own. But the coast is in there somewhere, in the way the stripes hold their spacing, the quiet between them, the loose marks that wander across the paper the way a wave pulls back over wet sand. Hang it where the light moves through the day. It won't look the same at noon as it does at dusk.
